Alex Wainer

Alex Wainer has been interested in mass media his whole life. The interplay and relationships between various media has been a focus of study and research resulting in, most recently two papers presented on the cinematic adaptation of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings at conferences of the National Communication Association in 2002 and 2003. Prior to completing his undergraduate education, Alex served in Youth With a Mission from 1976 to 1984. After getting his B.A. in Theatre Arts from Valdosta State University, Alex pursued graduate studies in communication with a concentration in cinema studies at Regent University. While there he served as film reviewer for the student-produced news program. While teaching at Milligan College in Tennessee, Dr. Wainer created the communication department’s film studies minor. While in Atlanta, Ga., he taught communication and film at Atlanta Christian College and Georgia State University. Since 2004 he has taught at the School of Communication and Media at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, FL. For several years he has been contributing articles to Charles Colson’s Breakpoint Online website ( that analyze the relationship between faith and popular culture. In the summer of 2005, he made presentations on film and worldviews at Prison Fellowship’s Wilberforce Forum Centurions conference. He is married to Judith, and has one son, Benjamin.

Fellow comic book fan, Gary Robinson’s favorite superhero is Superman, and as a pastor, you might be surprised to see how rich a vein of spiritual insight he has tapped by studying the Man of Steel.
